DESCRIPTION:Dear ladies\, \nOur next meeting will be a potluck picnic\, to be held at Sathi’s house on Friday\, 19th June. All welcome. \nPlease keep an eye on our WhatsApp group for further details. \nThe group visited Textiel Innovatie Maastricht last month. Melanie enjoyed taking part\, and her granddaughter\, Isabel\, also showed her needlework skills. \nChristine Phillips\, sends the following – “I thought it was a fabulous alternative to our usual meet-ups. The panel we were working on is one of seven that are being prepared in Limburg. All seven will be finished off in Maastricht before being stored in the Museum in Venlo. It was wonderful that they welcomed anyone\, regardless of skill level\, to participate in and contribute to a great project. These panels acknowledge this area’s participation in the Slave trade (one of the darkest periods of civilisation). \nMelanie Murray\, send the following: We were told about a stitching project that is taking place around Limburg. Seven huge hanging panels are being worked on. They are more than two meters high\, and some people were working on scaffolding! Volunteers around the area are working on them. They will be completed and combined before being displayed in Venlo in September. I think it is safe to say that it was a new skill for us all\, working on something so huge doing something we had never done before. I\, for one\, was very doubtful about how it was going\, but I looked on the other side and was pleasantly surprised by what I had done\, but more importantly….what my eight-year-old granddaughter had done! \nIt was so neat and showed such patience. The weather forecast was far from what we had hoped for. In a perfect world\, we imagined a beautiful sunny day with a gentle breeze. Instead\, the rain fell steadily\, and the wind blew fiercely. But life does not stop simply because the weather refuses to cooperate. It is what it is. Even with the rain and strong winds\, nothing could stop our steps from making their way to Bitches Brew. \nThe exhibition featured works by Tanja Ritterbex\, Keetje Mans\, and Aline Thomassen. Many of us found ourselves especially drawn to Keetje Mans and Aline Thomassen\, though for several of us\, myself included\, Aline Thomassen’s work left the deepest impression. Her paintings feel emotional\, physical\, and deeply psychological\, exploring themes of womanhood\, motherhood\, grief\, identity\, sensuality\, vulnerability\, and survival. In her work\, women are allowed to exist in all their contradictions at once: powerful yet wounded\, sensual yet grieving\, maternal yet furious\, fragile yet enduring. Standing before her paintings\, we felt something difficult to explain\, emotional\, mysterious\, and profoundly human all at once. \nAfter the exhibition\, Billy booked us a table at Ipanema Cafe\, where some of us continued discussing the works from Bitches Brew. In contrast\, others simply enjoyed catching up with one another. It was a lovely Sunday afternoon\, thoughtfully spent. Thank you\, Billy\, and ladies\, for the kind of togetherness that always stimulates my thoughts whenever I visit an art exhibition. \nLaila Olson.
